Kanaan, Team 7-Eleven, Finish Second at Michigan

        BROOKLYN, Mich. (Aug. 1, 2004) -Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan definitely had
the fastest car Sunday in the Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar® Series Michigan Indy 400 at
Michigan International Speedway.  Unfortunately, despite dominating the first 189 laps, he was
to finish in second place.
        Buddy Rice took the victory, followed by Kanaan in second and Klein Tools/Jim Beam
driver Dan Wheldon in third place.
        Kanaan, who qualified on the pole for the event, put the #11 Team 7-Eleven
Dallara/Honda/Firestone into the lead at the drop of the green flag and absolutely dominated the
event, as the IRL IndyCar Series points leader led 184 of the first 190 laps of the event.
However, a caution period on lap 156 was to dictate Kanaan's chance for victory.
        When the field pitted for fuel and tires on lap 158, the race turned from being that of the
'fastest car to the finish,' to one of fuel economy.
        When the field went green on lap 162, Kanaan maintained his lead, avoiding the dicing
which took place as drivers jostled for position behind him. Responding to team orders, Kanaan
maintained his pace while conserving precious fuel.  Rice passed for the lead on lap 190, with
Kanaan falling into second place.  A last lap charge for the lead fell short by less than a car
length.
        Despite finishing second, Kanaan maintains a 57-point advantage over Rice in the
IndyCar Series points standings.
        Kanaan and the rest of the IndyCar Series teams return to action August 15 at Kentucky
Speedway for the Belterra Casino Indy 300. The event will be televised live by ABC Sports,
beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

        "I had a very strong car. I led over 180 laps and didn't win the race, so that hurts. I was
told to conserve fuel, so I did. As a result, I couldn't battle for the win. But, I am a team player
and am a part of this team. I had the strongest car and finished second; I guess that makes up
for my not having the best car and winning at Nashville. It hurts right now, but I know that after a
couple hours, I'll be over it and ready to look towards another opportunity."

        "The best car definitely did not win today's race. Team 7-Eleven had the fastest car and
provided excellent pit stops and support for Tony. Unfortunately, a caution period turned the
race into a fuel economy run. While it is unfortunate that we finished second, Tony still has the
lead in the points standings and we can look forward to going to Kentucky and aiming for
another victory."
