(July 31, 2004) - XM Satellite Radio driver Bryan Herta will start ninth tomorrow in the Michigan Indy 400 after turning a lap of 213.699 miles per hour in qualifying today at Michigan International Speedway. Herta recorded the 10th fastest qualifying speed, but will move forward one position on the grid as the result of an engine change by Helio Castroneves, who qualified second and will now start 21st by IRL rules. Herta, who heads into tomorrow's 200-lap event ranked ninth in the Indy Racing LeagueŽ (IRL) IndyCarŽ Series standings, is hoping to transform his seventh top-10 qualifying performance of the season into his second career series victory and first behind the wheel of the #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone. Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan won his first pole position of the 2004 season Saturday with a speed of 215.871 miles per hour. He will start alongside Kosuke Matsuura, who clocked in at 214.718. Scott Dixon (214.328) will start third, followed by Sam Hornish Jr. (214.179) and Vitor Meira (214.089). Kanaan's run gave Andretti Green Racing its fourth pole of the 2004 season and seventh pole since joining the IRL in 2003. Kanaan has four of those poles, Dan Wheldon has two and Dario Franchitti one. The team has won six of the nine races run this season. The Michigan Indy 400 - Round 10 of the 2004 IndyCar Series season - is set to go green Sunday at 3:25 p.m. (EDT) with live coverage from ABC Sports beginning at 3 p.m. Bryan Herta, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "I wish we'd have gotten a little bit more today, but that's about all we had. It's just so tricky here with the wind changing directions like it did during qualifying. It's tough to pick the right gear and get set up right for the conditions. But, I'm glad to be back here. Michigan is a great track and we're looking forward to a good 400 miles here tomorrow in the XM Satellite Radio car." We got everything we could out of it. But, we're gaining and I think we've got a good race car.
