Micks and Gibbons take CASCAR Twin 100 wins on the opening day of the MOPAR
Parts 500 Weekend at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park
CALGARY, AB - On Friday evening, Race City Motorsport Park played host to
time trials and a pair of 100-lap qualifying sprint races in advance of
Saturday night’s MOPAR Parts 300 CASCAR Super Series race at the
high-banked, Calgary half-mile oval.
During time trials, three-time and reigning CASCAR National champion Don
Thomson Jr. became CASCAR’s top all-time pole qualifying leader when he
captured his 18th career Super Series pole. Thomson’s Home Hardware Chevy
lapped the Race City oval in 17.510 seconds, which was 0.015 seconds
quicker than the best time of Peter Gibbons (17.525 secs.). The two will
line up first and second, respectively, in Saturday’s MOPAR Parts 300.
Prior to Thomson’s pole, he and Steve Robblee were tied with 17 each.
In the Twin 100 qualifying sprint races, Thomson led the first 81 laps of
the first 100 lap chase and appeared set to score the victory. But
suddenly, he dove into the pits during a late-race caution when he realized
that he had a tire going down and wouldn’t make it to the end. The surprise
move handed the lead to Power Water Taurus driver Kerry Micks, who appeared
to be on a mission as he fought his way from fifth at the start. After
getting a new right-front tire, Thomson returned to the race in ninth-place
and was able to recover to fifth by the checkered flag. Micks came home
with a three-second advantage over defending MOPAR Parts 300 winner Dave
Whitlock in his Avenue / NMT Dodge. NTN Dodge driver Mark Dilley completed
the podium finishers.
Peter Gibbons started on the pole in the second Twin 100 and aside from
lap 1 when outside front-row starter DJ Kennington nosed ahead at the start
/ finish line to lead a single lap, the Canadian Tire Chevy diver led every
other lap en route to yet another Twin 100 victory during the MOPAR Parts
500 Weekend. Kennington’s Castrol Dodge finished second, almost four
seconds back of Gibbons, while MOPAR Dodge driver Ron Beauchamp Jr.
overcame earlier handling problems to record a third-place result after
running as far back as ninth prior to the halfway point of the race.
The results of Twin 100s locked in the remainder of the 25-car starting
grid for Saturday night’s feature race at Race City. The MOPAR Parts 300 is
scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
