Kanaan Pilots Team 7-Eleven Car To
Top Of Speed Chart During Practice At Michigan
BROOKLYN, Mich. (July 30, 2004) - Tony Kanaan recorded the fastest speed of the day
during IRL IndyCar Series practice Friday at Michigan International Speedway, as teams and
drivers began preparation for Sunday afternoon's running of the Michigan Indy 400.
Kanaan, turning laps amongst a pack of cars which at times ran three-wide through the
18-degree banked turns at Michigan International Speedway, piloted the #11 Team 7-Eleven
Honda/Dallara/Firestone to the day's top speed of 214.797 miles per hour (33.5200 seconds),
while logging a total of 67 laps during the two practice sessions.
Following Kanaan on the speed chart were Kosuke Matsuura with a speed of 214.414
miles per hour (33.5799 seconds), and Tomas Scheckter at 214.277 miles per hour (33.6013
seconds). Buddy Rice (214.276 miles per hour, 33.6015 seconds) and Klein Tools/Jim Beam
driver Dan Wheldon (213.550 miles per hour, 33.7157 seconds) were fourth and fifth,
respectively.
Kanaan enters Sunday's event atop the IndyCar Series point standings, leading
Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice by 64 points (325-264).
Practice for Sunday's race continues early Saturday morning, followed by qualifying at
11 a.m. (EDT).
Tony Kanaan, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"There was a lot of drafting today. We were working on race setup a lot and I was able to
put up a pretty good lap while running behind my teammates. I don't think that lap time says a
lot because we were just working on our race setup. Because Michigan is a superspeedway,
and we'll be running together in big packs, where you qualify doesn't really matter. That's why
we've spent so much time on our race setup; it's important to have a good car on race day."
Kim Green, President, Andretti Green Racing:
"Michigan is a long race. We've been working hard to prepare for this event, looking to
optimize the Team 7-Eleven car for both qualifying and the race itself. Our speed indicates that
we're up there, but drafting makes a huge difference in speed at this track and we used some
drafts to get those speeds. We still have some work to do, but I'm confident we can put
ourselves in a position to qualify well and have a good race car."
