Rookie Hemphill Earns Pork Pole at Pocono; 5th Career Pole

 

LONG POND PA (7-29-04)  ARCA RE/MAX Series rookie Ryan Hemphill, in the TRIMSPA Dodge, captured the Pork Pole Award at Pocono Raceway Thursday afternoon for Saturday's Giant 200. It was his fifth career pole.

 

"The car worked beautifully all the way around the track," said Hemphill. "We weren't as good in practice, so I was a little concerned. But our qualifying run erased all my fears. Just got to hand to all the guys from this Braun Racing team. Once again, they delivered the perfect car."

 

Hemphill qualified with a speed of 166.190 mph nearly three mph faster than five-time series champion and current point leader Frank Kimmel, who qualified second in the Advance Auto Parts-Pork Ford with a speed of 163.559. 

 

Ken Weaver qualified a career-best third in the 1-800-4-A-Phone Pontiac. Brent Sherman, in the Serta Mattress-Hickory Farms Ford, was fourth. Rookie TJ Bell, in Brad Kemp's unsponsored Chevrolet, was fifth.

 

The Giant 200 is scheduled to get underway Saturday at 1 pm eastern.
