GORE-TEX TriGuard Gaskets Ideal for Sealing Valves Used in Chlorine Gas Service

ELKTON, Md.--July 26, 2004--GORE-TEX(R) TriGuard(TM) gaskets are the ideal sealing solution for municipal water and wastewater treatment plants, as well as other facilities that handle chlorine gas in their manufacturing processes.

The chlorine is typically supplied from 150-pound cylinders or ton containers, thereby making tight sealing an absolute necessity. Following extensive performance testing, GORE-TEX(R) TriGuard(TM) gaskets have been recognized by the Chlorine Institute as highly suited to sealing fragile pipe flanges in chlorine systems. Applied with a low bolt load, the gaskets seal tight and stay tight, even with varying flange conditions. The unique sealed inner diameter design eliminates the risk of chlorine absorption into the gasket. Since its inclusion in the Chlorine Institute's Pamphlet #95 Gaskets for Chlorine Service, GORE-TEX(R) TriGuard(TM) gaskets have been adopted for use in many chlorine cylinder and ton container valve outlet caps and yoke-valve connections. The gaskets also deliver superior performance in halogen gas applications.

According to Sean Doyle, market specialist, the conventional lead gaskets traditionally used in chlorine valves tend to provide inconsistent service and are prone to failure.

"When lead gaskets fail to hold a seal for an extended period of time, expensive operational problems can occur, causing higher O&M costs, hazardous environmental leaks, and even unit shutdowns. The technology designed into our patented TriGuard(TM) gasket greatly minimizes these risks," he says. Among its performance characteristics are very low creep, high bolt-load retention, and the ability to stay tight over a longer period of time. The PTFE construction, in addition to being environmentally friendly, makes this gasket chemically resistant to virtually all media in the pH 0-14 range. Finally, GORE-TEX(R) TriGuard(TM) gaskets seal extremely effectively at the low gasket stresses required in fragile flange assemblies.

For more than 30 years, Gore's Sealant Technologies Group has developed innovative PTFE gaskets, seals and other fluid-sealing products for both standard and unique sealing and pumping applications. Each product is engineered to be the best-performing and highest-quality product solution in its class.
