Broken Driveshaft Ends Day Early For
Klein Tools/Jim Beam Entry At Milwaukee
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (July 25, 2004) - Klein Tools/Jim Beam driver Dan
Wheldon worked his way into the top 10 Sunday before a broken driveshaft ended
his day and left him with an 18th place finish in the Menards A.J. Foyt Indy 225 at The
Milwaukee Mile.
Wheldon, who started 22nd Sunday following a race morning engine change,
gained seven positions by the time the first caution period arrived on lap 39. Wheldon
came to the attention of his Klein Tools/Jim Beam crew on lap 42, which serviced the
#26 machine and gained him four additional spots for the restart on lap 45.
From there, Wheldon went to work on moving up through the top 10, but found
the going tough. He managed to work his way to ninth over the next 100 laps and
then came back to the pit lane on lap 147 following the fourth of five caution flags that
flew over the event. However, as he prepared the leave the pit box, misfortune struck
in the form of a broken driveshaft that ended his day and left him with just his third
finish outside the top 10 this season.
Wheldon's Andretti Green Racing teammate, ArcaEx driver Dario Franchitti,
scored his first career Indy Racing League IndyCar® Series victory at Milwaukee,
outrunning Buddy Rice for the win. Sam Hornish Jr. was third, followed by Team 7-
Eleven driver Tony Kanaan in fourth and Vitor Meira in fifth.
The IndyCar Series continues next Sunday at Michigan International
Speedway with Round 10 of the 2004 IndyCar Series schedule.
Dan Wheldon, #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"It's a shame because the car was certainly better than it was in qualifying and
we were just slowly working our way through the field. The Klein Tools/Jim Beam
crew worked really hard on this race and it's just a disappointing way to end. We'll
look forward to Michigan. The Honda engines are very strong and the team will give
us a great car there, so we're looking forward to it."
Tony Cotman, Team Manager,
#26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"Quite honestly, it was just a lousy day for us and we paid the price for it. Dan
did a good job of making the most out of what he had and I did think our pit stops
were very good. But, other than that things just weren't very good all day and then we
broke a driveshaft. I'm glad the day is behind us."
