Franchitti Dominates At Milwaukee;
Leads 111 Laps to Record First IndyCar Series Victory
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (July 25, 2004) - The historic Milwaukee Mile race track rewards
perfection, both in car setup as well as driving skill, and ArcaEx driver Dario Franchitti displayed both
as he dominated the field Sunday afternoon to win the Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCarŽ Series
Menards A.J. Foyt Indy 225.
Franchitti, who led 111 of 225 laps, finished six-tenths of a second ahead of Buddy Rice, while
Sam Hornish Jr. was credited with third place.
The victory was Franchitti's first IndyCar Series victory, his second oval track win and the 11th
Indy-style victory. He also became the second Scotsman to win at The Milwaukee Mile, following Jim
Clark, who took victory at the one-mile oval on August 18, 1963.
Franchitti started the race from seventh place, and methodically began picking off the leaders
as he and the ArcaEx crew found the optimum balance in the #27 ArcaEx Dallara/Honda/Firestone.
He was fourth on lap 70, third by lap 80 and moved into second place behind Helio
Castroneves on lap 84. Franchitti took the lead on lap 106, diving to the bottom of the track heading
into Turn 3 as Castroneves was caught on the high side by lapped traffic.
He would never trail under green flag conditions again.
He did briefly drop to second place under caution on lap 147, exiting pit lane in second place,
but immediately regained the lead on the restart.
A fifth and final caution on lap 212, brought on by a Jaques Lazier crash, gave the field one
final opportunity to catch the Scotsman. But Franchitti made a perfect restart on lap 219 and paced the
filed the final six laps.
Franchitti and the rest of the IndyCar Series teams return to action next week at Michigan
International Speedway for the Michigan Indy 400 on August 1. The event will be televised live by ABC
Sports at 3:00 p.m. EDT.
Dario Franchitti, #27 ArcaEx Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"This win means a lot, both to me and to the ArcaEx team, especially to come at a special
track like The Milwaukee Mile. We had the car to do the job. To come back after taking a year off (due
to a back injury) and win this race makes it pretty special. I thought the final laps would be determined
by handling. I just wanted to make sure I got that last restart right, and we did. Buddy Rice has been
quick all year and I was concerned about him, but it worked out well. It has been frustrating in that
we've been quick, week-in and week-out, but didn't have much luck. Today we had some really good
luck and things definitely went our way. The car was fantastic all day. It went off a bit as the run went
on, but not as much as other people. I think the engineers got it right. Nothing went wrong today."
Kyle Moyer, General Manager, Andretti Green Racing:
"We had the three things that make the difference: we had the best car on the race track, the
best engine we could have and Dario Franchitti behind the wheel. You put all that together and
nobody is going to beat you on a day like this. As soon as we got into our second stint and he drove
from seventh to the lead, I knew we had a winner if nothing crazy happened and that's all that
mattered."
