Hayner SPEED World Challenge GT Portland Wrap-Up
Knocking On The Door of the Top-10, Hayner Finishes 11th
GMAC/Trenton Forging #5 GTO Best Finish of the Season
Portland, Ore. – July 25, 2004 Stu Hayner finished 11th place with his
#5 GMAC Commercial Finance/Trenton Forging GTO at Portland
International Raceway in Sunday’s SPEED World Challenge GT Round 5. The
race ran in conjunction with the Portland Grand Prix.
“We had a good set-up in the car,” said Hayner. “With the drastic
change in the weather, the crew had to make some calculated guesses.
It’s been 100 degrees all week and just before race time it was 67.
That’s a huge change and we simply don’t have past-data to help us in a
situation like this. They did a great job.”
“The car was handling well early on,” continued Hayner. “Then on lap 7
Lou Gigliotti [#28 Corvette] drove right into the side of me. We got
knocked of the track and sustained a fair amount of body damage. We
were able to continue, but we got caught behind a couple of cars that
could out power us on the backstretch. I’d catch them through the
infield, then they’d yank me down the backstretch.”
“I really think we had a chance to break into the top 10 this week,”
said Hayner shaking is head. “We had a good car and we were running
strong early. To get taking out like that is very frustrating. I feel
bad for the crew. We’ll put it back together and get it ready for
Mosport. We have a great following of fans up there and we’re really
looking forward to it.”
While in Toronto, the team will spend Monday taping a television
