Lapcevich wins Canadian Tire 100 CASCAR Super Series race at the Vancouver Indy

VANCOUVER, BC - Jeff Lapcevich extended his unprecedented streak of CASCAR
road course wins to five on Saturday afternoon at the Vancouver Indy when
he led all 35 laps of the Canadian Tire 100. The Tim Hortons / Fastline
Chevy driver was challenged by three-time and defending CASCAR champion Don
Thomson Jr. for a half-dozen laps in the middle of the 35 lap race, but a
failed passing move on lap 23 damaged the nose of his Home Hardware Chevy
and he was no longer able to keep up with Lapcevich.
Over the remaining laps, the Caistor Centre, ON driver was able to stretch
out a comfortable lead and took the checkered flag almost three seconds in
front of Thomson, who also finished second to Lapcevich two weeks ago in
Toronto. Thomson was heartened by the result, however, given that he came
from eighth on the starting grid to record a runner-up finish on the
12-turn temporary street circuit at Concord Pacific Place.
Third place went to Kerry Micks, driver of the Power Water Ford Taurus.
The Mt. Albert, ON racer ran fourth for most of the event but was able to
get past Super Series points leader Peter Gibbons on the last lap to fight
his way onto the podium. In spite of losing the spot, Gibbons' result was a
solid one considering his crew worked for most of the afternoon, on
Saturday, to repair the team's Canadian Tire Chevy following a heavy crash
in the morning qualifying session.
With a sixth-place result, Trevor Siebert of Williams Lake, BC was the top
finishing western competitor in the Canadian Tire 100. Snap On Tools / GE
Chevy driver Mark Swain completed the race in 13th-place, which was tops
among the rookie racers in the field.
Following the seventh of 12 events, Gibbons has a slim, 15-point lead over
Thomson in the chase for the championship (1090 points to 1075). On the
strength of his three road course wins so far in '04, Lapcevich sits tied
for third in the points with three-time National champ Dave Whitlock. With
1053 points, both are still very much in contention as the series heads to
Calgary for next weekend's MOPAR 500 Race Weekend at Race City Motorsport
Park. Whitlock is the defending winner of that race.
