MORGAN IS NO. 5 QUALIFIER IN SEATTLE
KENT, Wash. (July 24, 2004) - Larry Morgan was relatively pleased with his
qualifying results for the Pro Stock category at the CARQUEST Auto Parts
NHRA Nationals, and he says he's ready for the race tomorrow. Morgan
qualified No. 5 after four rounds on an ultra-hot race track in his Team
Mopar Dodge Stratus, as he and crew chief Bob Glidden continued to work on
the tune-up for the Northwest summer conditions on a newly-resurfaced
quarter-mile at Pacific Raceways.
"We were three thousandths away from being No. 2 (6.776-second ET for points
leader and defending Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson). Tomorrow is going to
be cooler; the car is going to be easier to control.
"We just spun the tires so hard out here with this new track, there wasn't a
whole lot that we could do. We were within a hundredth (of a second) of the
quickest car every round, so we're doing pretty good.
"We're pretty happy with it. Hopefully we can get this Team Mopar Dodge in
the winner's circle tomorrow. That's what we're here for, that's what we
want to do," said Morgan, who was runner-up to Greg Anderson last weekend in
Denver and last year here in Seattle.
After changing engines last weekend in search of higher performance, engine
builder Morgan kept the same one in the car all weekend. "We didn't do any
engine change this weekend," said the Newark, Ohio, resident who is fourth
in the Pro Stock point standings. "We do have one, however, that we're going
to put in for Sonoma (next weekend's race). It's similar to the one we have.
It has a little more power in the middle, but the motor we have in the car
now is very good. We're pretty happy with what we've got. We just have to
fine tune it for tomorrow."
Morgan faces Mark Pawuk in the first round of final eliminations on Sunday,
which begin at 11 a.m. PT.
