Hayner Picks Up Time In SPEED World Challenge GT Qualifying
GMAC/Trenton Forging #5 GTO Qualifies 15th
Portland, Ore. – July 24, 2004 “It may not look like it on paper,”
explained Stu Hayner, driver of the GMAC/Trenton Forging #5 GTO, “but
this was the best qualifying we’ve had since we started this program.”
Hayner was referring to today’s SPEED World Challenge GT qualifying at
Portland International Raceway for Sunday’s SPEED World Challenge GT
Round 5 that will run in conjunction with the Portland Grand Prix.
“We picked up time from yesterday and it appears we’ve really got the
car right for the extreme conditions we’re experiencing this weekend.
It’s hot, and the track is really unpredictable. Some of the cars that
turned quick laps during qualifying aren’t able to sustain those
speeds. The race is going to come down to taking care of equipment.”
“I’m really happy with how the car feels,” Hayner continued. “Our guys
seem to have figured out a good middle ground for our race set-up. We
qualified about 1.5 seconds off the pole sitter. But our quick time is
reflective of a time we can run consistently throughout Sunday’s race.
With the weather this hot, a 50-minute sprint is going to have
endurance racing ramifications on tires and equipment. We think we’ve
got the right combination to put us in the hunt at the end.”
Sunday’s SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Round Five race, scheduled for
32 laps (62.208 miles), or 50 minutes, takes its standing start at
10:55 a.m. (PDT). Live Timing & Scoring is available through
www.world-challenge.com. The race initially airs August 1 at 1:00 p.m.
(EDT), 10:00 a.m. (PDT).
