Terry Borcheller - Infineon (Sears Point)
race
double axle
Terry Borcheller had a disappointing finish to the American Le Mans Series
race at Infineon (Sears Point) Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Borcheller, of
Gainesville, Ga., and Johnny Mowlem of Maidenhead, England, were on course for their
fourth-consecutive GTS podium finish, but a double axle failure put them out of
the race.
Mowlem started the No. 63 ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R third on the GTS
grid, after qualifying in one minute 31.276 seconds on the 2.53-mile road course.
He drove the first stint, moved up to second in class at 1h25 of the two-hour
45-minute race, then handed off to Borcheller at 1h35. Borcheller had just
completed his first lap when both axles broke on the car, putting him out of the
race.
"It's just a shame for everybody involved because second was looking pretty
good. That would have helped us a lot with the points and would have kept us
close to the leaders in the points. It also would have given us our highest
podium finish, so it's really frustrating," Borcheller said.
"The ACEMCO crew is impeccable with maintenance. They don't shortcut
anything. They had all the axles crack-checked, but they broke 'way before they were
even possibly considered to be worn. Both axles broke in the middle, at the
strongest point of the axle. It's impossible - you couldn't do it if you tried to
do it - so our only conclusion is there was some faulty metal."
off-track highlight
Borcheller said the highlight of his race week was meeting with a local group
hosted by Motorsports Ministries. "They brought 15 young people who live in a
foster home," he said. "I got a chance to speak to them and it was great."
Borcheller also expressed his thanks to Richard Anderson of Motorsports
Ministries, who hosted a barbecue for ALMS participants during the Sonoma race week.
next
Borcheller will drive the No. 63 ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R in an American
Le Mans Series race at Portland International Raceway in Portland, Ore., on
July 25.
