TEAM VIPER, ARCHER GRAB PODIUM FINISH AT INFINEON
RACEWAY
JULY 19, 2004
Sonoma, Cal. - Team Viper earned their first Speed GT Series podium finish
last weekend at Infineon Raceway. Tommy Archer impressively drove his Viper
Competition Coupe into third position after starting the race in fifth. He
maintained the position after two full-course cautions and posted the highest Speed
GT Series event finish for Dodge Motorsports this season. Archer earned the
podium finish after three fourth place finishes in the previous rounds. The
veteran is now second in Speed GT Series points, trailing Michael Galati in the
Audi RS 6.
Archer had the following comments:
"Once again, the C3 Controls/Whelen Engineering Dodge Viper came off the line
like a bullet," Archer said. "My biggest concern at the start was, "Can we
get to turn 1 before the Audi?" We accomplished this and the Audi slowed down
the rest of the field behind me, allowing me to conserve my tires for the next
8-10 laps of the race. The first and second place Porsche and Corvette checked
out, and I knew I couldn't maintain their pace. Knowing that the Cadillac
and Corvettes behind me would eventually pass the Audi's, I anticipated a close
finish at the end, and needed to conserve the car for the final laps. I was
able to hold on to third in the final lap and bring the first podium finish in
the Viper this year".
Archer was one of the three Team Viper members to place in the Top-10. Mike
McCann finished in eighth position ahead of Tim Wiens, who finished ninth.
Bob Woodhouse faced a major challenge after a heavy crash in practice with the
Woodhouse Auto Family Viper Competition Coupe. Uninjured, he quickly switched
to a back-up car for the remainder of the weekend. He and his dedicated crew
battled back to finish the race solidly in 11th position. Jim McCann was
credited with a 12th place finish, and Al Becera, driving the only Viper GTS in the
field, crossed the line in 19th.
Team Viper and Dodge Motorsports maintained third position in the Speed GT
Series manufacturer points standings. The series resumes action this week at
the Portland International Raceway, where Archer will face an additional 45 lbs
of "rewards weight" in this next race, putting him in the heaviest car entered
in the event.
