Detroit River Regatta APBA Gold Cup Roars to Success
2004 Unlimited Hydroplane Races Cap Off Century of Hydroplane Glory, Provide Great Start for Next Century
DETROIT, July 18 -- The "Race of the Century," the 2004 Chrysler Jeep Superstores Detroit APBA Gold Cup, celebrated the centennial anniversary of the Gold Cup in style. The event came out of race weekend successful on all fronts.
One hundred years of power and glory were on display throughout the weekend as both the Detroit River Regatta Association and the Chrysler Jeep Superstores put on a successful event for the second consecutive year.
"I really can't say enough about the team that made this thing happen. I have to thank the Chrysler Jeep Superstores for everything they did to celebrate the centennial anniversary of something special in Detroit," said Tom D'Eath, chairman and president of the DRRA. "This was the greatest event in the history of the Gold Cup."
The Gold Cup is the oldest awarded trophy in motor sport, as it is now 100 years old.
The Chrysler Jeep Superstores Advertising Association was the title sponsor of the race, with participation from DaimlerChrysler AG, and teamed with the DRRA to present it. The Chrysler Jeep Superstores Advertising Association has been the event's title sponsor, with participation from DaimlerChrysler AG, since 2002. Prior to that, Chrysler and Jeep were the title sponsors from 1996 to 2001.
"We'd like to say 'thanks' to the fans for celebrating Detroit history and heritage, and coming out to support the event," said Jim Schebil, president of the Chrysler Jeep Superstores Advertising Association. "This event was successful because of Detroit's fan base."
