Reichert, Payne lead fields into Sunday's Eliminations
JOLIET, Ill. - Three-time North Central Division Champion Bill
Reichert qualified his Top Alcohol Dragster on top for this weekend's
Chicagoland Dodge Dealers NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Route 66
Raceway.
Reichert, of Owosso, Mich., ran a 5.343 second run at 266.53 mph to stay
ahead of Marty Thacker and Todd Datweiler who are second and third
respectively. Thacker clocked in at 5.375, 263.10 mph and Datweiler
recorded a 5.383 second, 266.06 mph run.
Jay Payne leads the Funny Car field with a pass of 5.669 seconds at
255.34 mph. Payne, who has seven divisional championships and one
national championship in his career, is followed by Chuck Cheeseman with
a 5.699 second run at 253.37 in the No. 2 spot and Paul Lee in third at
5.716, 248.98.
Local Illinois racers are dominating the Top Sportsman class with David
Howard of Braidwood on top with a run of 6.895 seconds at 200.26 mph.
Palos Hills resident Kevin Lawrence is the only other Top Sportsman
racer to surpass the 200 mph mark and sits in the No. 2 spot at 6.895,
200.26 mph. Don Boerma of Tinley Park, Rick Sojka Jr. of Batavia,
Anthony Munao of Arlington Heights, and Tim Kirman of Morris are also in
the top 10 after final qualifying.
John Coughlin jumped to the top of the pack in Super Stock with a lap of
8.826 seconds, 1.124 seconds under the index in his '04 Cavalier.
Coughlin is followed by Ronnie Terrell and Bo Butner in second and third
respectively.
Dayton, Ohio, racer Donald Holmes put his '77 Firebird in the No. 1
spot in Stock running 11.497 seconds, 1.253 seconds under the index.
Steve Polhill and Dave Edwards round out the top three going into
tomorrow's eliminations.
Racing continues Sunday at 8a.m. Gates open at 7 a.m. Tickets are $21.
