Team 7-Eleven's Kanaan Qualifies Fifth At Nashville

LEBANON, Tenn. (July 16, 2004) - Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan turned a
qualifying lap of 199.804 miles per hour this afternoon at the 1.33-mile Nashville
Superspeedway, which earned him the fifth starting position for Saturday evening's
running of the Firestone Indy 200.
Kanaan, who currently leads the 2004 IRL IndyCar® Series standings by 28
points over Klein Tools/Jim Beam teammate Dan Wheldon (275-247), is the only
IndyCar Series driver to have recorded a top-10 finish in each of the season's seven
outings thus far, and will be gunning for his third victory of the year.
Honda-powered machines took the top five positions for Saturday evening's
event as Buddy Rice won the pole with a speed of 201.231 miles per hour, Vitor Meira
was second (200.967) and XM Satellite Radio teammate Bryan Herta (200.955) earned
the third starting spot.
The Firestone Indy 200, round eight of the 2004 IRL IndyCar Series, is set to
begin at 7 p.m. (EDT) Saturday, with ESPN providing live broadcast coverage of the
200-lap event.

"We just didn't find everything we needed for today, but we'll turn our attention to
the race and see what we can do. It is what it is. The important thing is that the whole
Team 7-Eleven has been working so hard at being consistent and being smart, so we
just need to keep doing what we're doing. We've been able to race really well and that's
where it counts."

"Tony had a solid run. Obviously, we're never quite satisfied at Andretti Green
unless we're on the pole or in the front row, so we feel like we left a little bit on the table
today. But, we know that having a good, solid race car is much more important and we
worked on that almost the entire first session today, so we feel like we've got a good
start on that. Starting from a few positions further back never seems to hinder Tony
Kanaan, so we're looking forward to him doing his normal great job."
