STAMBAUGH TOPS SSP SPRINT CARS FOR FIRST CARRER WIN
NEWBERRYTOWN, PA (July 15, 2004) – Eric Stambaugh raced to his first career
410 Sprint Car win in a rain shortened program at Susquehanna Speedway Park
on Thursday evening. The feature events for the PA Four Cylinder Stocks and
the Xtreme Enduro Stocks were postponed. The Xtreme Enduro Stock Car feature
will be run as part of the July 22 program with double features, while the PA
Four Cylinder event will be rescheduled sometime in the future at a date to
be announced with double features as well. Since one feature was officially
completed, rain checks will not be honored at the next event. A victory lane
celebration will take place on July 29 for Stambaugh “SSP’s World’s Fastest
Driver for 10 laps†as he also set the 10 lap track record in 2 minutes,
30.88 seconds.
The 25 lap Sprint Car feature event was a barnburner right up until rain
slowed the pace with 19 laps completed. Jeff Taylor led the first lap before
yielding the top spot to “SSP World’s Fastest Driver for 1 lap†Brian Leppo.
Leppo set the pace for the next eleven laps, although most of those laps he
was under pressure from Stambaugh. After several wheel to wheel battles,
Stambaugh finally slipped by Leppo on the 13th lap. But the race wasn’t over
yet, point leader Fred Rahmer and Greg Hodnett were on the move, passing Leppo,
and closing on Stambaugh when the sky opened up on the 19th lap. The rain
did eventually stop, but after making an attempt at running in the track rains
began again, and the feature was called complete.
Stambaugh received $2,500 for his first career 410 Sprint Car win. Rahmer
finished second followed by Hodnett, Leppo and Lance Dewease in the top five.
Rounding out the top ten were Jim Siegel, Josh Wells, Dave Cordier Jr.,
Brent Kluge and Steve Wilbur. Heats went to Stambaugh and Leppo.
PA Four Cylinder heats went to Chris McLanigan and Kyle Levengood. Xtreme
Enduro Stock Car heats went to Adrian Barnhardt and Pat Hires. Alan Miller
won the Pepsi Challenge Dash Race. Brian Wentzel drove an Eagle Talon to the
overall win in the One-On-One Street Car Drags.
The next race will be Thursday Night, July 22 as SSP hosts A.R.C.H. (Auto
Racing Club of Hagerstown) Fan Night. All A.R.C.H. members will receive a
$1.00 discount on general admission tickets for the remainder of the 2004 racing
season. This is similar to the discount for the York County Racing Club. A
membership card must be shown to receive the discount. The Super Sportsman
Tour will also visit along with the Open Challenge Race for the Street Stocks
and Thunder Cars. The Xtreme Enduro Stock Cars will run their make-up feature
along with another 20 lap feature event. The 410 Sprint Cars will return to
action on Thursday, July 29.
