NOTES OF INTEREST: The Midwestern-based ARCA RE/MAX Series, in its 52nd season of competition, returns to some old roots when it drives deeper Midwest for the Shop 'n Save 150 on the 1.25-mile Gateway Int'l Raceway oval Friday night, July 16 in Madison, Illinois. The RE/MAX Series made two previous appearances at Gateway, the most memorable of which made for a thrilling late-race duel between three-time series champion Tim Steele and series veteran Mark Gibson in 1997. Steele and Gibson traded the lead twice on the final lap before Gibson edged Steele at the line for his career-first series victory. Frank Kimmel won the rain-shortened event at Gateway in 2001. Initially, the RE/MAX Series first raced in the St. Louis market in 1986 when the now defunct St. Louis Int'l Raceway road course, which was located on the same grounds that Gateway Int'l currently inhabits, hosted the Busch ARCA 200 won by 19-time series winner Bob Schacht. NASCAR Nextel Cup Series veteran and 11-time ARCA RE/MAX Series winner Ken Schrader will make his 33rd career ARCA RE/MAX Series start at Gateway. Schrader has already competed in RE/MAX Series events earlier this year at Nashville, Toledo and Pocono with plans to run the DuQuoin mile-dirt in September. Kimmel, who has 53 series wins total, needs just 1 more to tie Jack Bowsher for second on ARCA's all-time win list. 6-time series Iggy Katona is the all-time series winner with 79. Kimmel, the current point leader and 5-time series champion, is also approaching Katona's all-time championship mark of 6 series titles. In addition, Kimmel, who has 17 career superspeedway Pork Pole awards, is only 1 pole away from tying Steele's all-time superspeedway pole mark of 18. Kimmel is also approaching Steele's all-time superspeedway lap leader mark. Kimmel, who has led a total of 2,261 superspeedway laps, is just 47 away from Steele's all-time record of 2,308. Other notable entrants include red-hot rookie Ryan Hemphill fresh off his win at Kentucky Speedway last weekend, 2-time Daytona ARCA 200 winner Bobby Gerhart, 2nd in points Brent Sherman, 3rd-generation racers Billy Venturini and Jason Jarrett, Pryor OK driver Christi Passmore, Centralia IL driver Joe Cooksey and 23-year series campaigner and 4-time series winner Mark Gibson. Sparks NV driver TJ Bell currently leads Galesburg IL driver AJ Fike by just 10 points in the Rookie of the Year chase headed to Gateway. In addition, 18-year-old Springfield IL driver Justin Allgaier will make his superspeedway debut at Gateway. Second generation driver Brian Keselowski, son of 1989 ARCA RE/MAX Series driving champion Bob Keselowski, is also entered. Bob Keselowski also fields a Craftsman Truck Series team for another son Brad.
