CASCAR: Toronto Indy Qualifying & Grid

CASCAR Super Series
QUALIFYING & STARTING GRID: TORONTO INDY

July 10, 2004

Jeff Lapcevich earns the pole for Saturday afternoon's CASCAR race at the
T.O. Indy

TORONTO, ON - When Jeff Lapcevich won last year's CASCAR Super Series race
at the Toronto Indy, he did it from the outside of the front row. CASCAR's
road course dominator will be starting from the pole, on Saturday
afternoon, when he attempts to make a return visit to victory lane in one
of the series' biggest events.
On Saturday morning, the Tim Hortons / Fastline Motorsports Chevy driver
earned the top qualifying spot in the second of two qualifying sessions
when he lapped the Toronto Indy circuit in 1 minute and 18.415 seconds, at
a speed of 129.649 km/h. The lap was good enough to knock Friday's
provisional polesitter DJ Kennington to second on the grid for Saturday's
36-lap race. Kennington's time on Friday was 1:18.419.
Three-time and reigning CASCAR Super Series champ Don Thomson Jr. will
start third, alongside of current points leader Peter Gibbons, who slid
into the tire barrier early in Saturday morning's final qualifying session,
but didn't inflict major damage on his Canadian Tire Chevy.
All of the top drivers qualified under the former track Toronto Indy
CASCAR track record of 1 minute and 19.041 seconds, which was set by
two-time Toronto Indy CASCAR race winner Robin Buck in 2002.
Talking about his car and the changes they made to it prior to Saturday
morning's pole-winning run, Lapcevich said, "We changed a lot of stuff on
the car after yesterday. We put new springs up front and the car is really
feeling good."
But even though he's starting up front, Lapcevich is concerned about his
car heading into the race. "There still might be a bit of a miss under the
hood. We think it might be related to the carb. It makes such a big
difference to be out front and able to run your own pace. I'll be happy if
we can stay out front and let the guys beat each other up behind me."
If he's successful in winning on Saturday afternoon, Lapcevich will join
Robin Buck and Kevin Dowler as 'two-time' Toronto Indy winners.
The sixth CASCAR Super Series race of the season is scheduled to take the
green flag this afternoon at 4:15 p.m.
