FedEx Express Opens New Gateway Hub in Miami to Facilitate Global Trade
MIAMI--July 9, 2004--New $50 Million Facility Serves South Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean, Includes Onsite Customs Clearance |
FedEx Express, subsidiary of FedEx Corp. , today announced the opening of its newest facility - the Miami Gateway Hub. Located at 6100 N.W. 36th St., the new $50 million facility will not only serve the growing South Florida market but will also significantly enhance the company's connectivity to Latin America and the Caribbean.
"FedEx will do what it takes to provide our customers with convenient and reliable access to the global economy," said David J. Bronczek, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Express. "The Miami Gateway Hub will be a critical part of the FedEx global network of services and solutions."
According to the Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County's official economic development partnership, global trade is already one of Miami-Dade's largest business sectors, exceeding $50 billion since 2002. Miami receives nearly 80 percent of U.S. air imports from Latin America and the Caribbean, and is proving to be at the crossroads of Asian and European trade routes as well, with more than 1,200 multinational corporations in the area.
The FedEx Gateway Hub will sort up to 6,000 packages per hour or 40,000 packages a day. The facility, with approximately 145,000 square feet of warehouse and office space, occupies 23 acres of land at the Miami International Airport. The hub will also include refrigerated storage space for agricultural products, such as produce and flowers, and a 1,000-square-foot cooler system.
The facility will also house a bonded warehouse with onsite customs clearance agents to quickly and efficiently process Miami imports. According to the Beacon Council, 54 percent of all U.S. trade with Central America flows through Miami, 40 percent of the Caribbean trade and 34 percent of its trade with South America.
The FedEx integrated air-ground network will serve the South Florida and Latin American and Caribbean markets with four daily inbound and outbound flights, connecting the world via Miami to Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, The Bahamas, Panama, Ecuador, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Haiti, Jamaica, The Cayman Islands and Belize.
FedEx serves a variety of industries from its South Florida locations, including technology, agriculture, manufacturing and textiles. "Today FedEx transports everything from semiconductors manufactured in Asia, to flowers grown in Colombia, to aircraft engines produced in the U.S.," said Bronczek.
