Terry Borcheller - Lime Rock race

Terry Borcheller had mixed results during his marathon week of three races. 
He started and ended with podium finishes, but didn't fare as well in the 
middle.

The Gainesville, Ga., driver left Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, 
Ohio, on June 27 with a third-place GTS finish in the American Le Mans Series. 
Four days later, he was knocked out of the Rolex Sports Car Series race at 
Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., flew through the night to 
Lakeville, Conn., then notched another ALMS podium finish on July 5.

Borcheller had four consecutive wins at Daytona International Speedway, but 
the streak ended on July 1. His co-driver, Forest Barber of Fort Worth, Texas, 
qualified the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Doran JE4 15th on the grid with a lap of 
one minute 53.594 seconds on the 3.56-mile infield road course. Barber drove 
the first race stint and moved up to ninth before he rolled into the pit lane 
at the end of his fuel supply.

Borcheller took over at 1h7 of the two-hour 45-minute race and charged from 
12th to ninth before another car hit the rear of the Pontiac-powered Doran, 
knocked it into the wall, then hit it again in the front. The car was unable to 
continue, leaving Borcheller and Barber to finish 15th.

"Daytona was a major disappointment for our team. I always enjoy the Paul 
Revere and it's a shame it ended that way," Borcheller said. "We'd been 
struggling leading up to Daytona and that was just the icing on the cake. But we're 
going to fix the car, and the positive thing is that it will give us some time to 
do some updates and lighten up some bodywork and some of the things we were 
going to do already. We'll be back after it at Mid-Ohio [Sports Car Course on 
Aug. 8.]"

The American Le Mans Series made its first start at Lime Rock Park, but 
Borcheller was ready. He qualified the No. 63 ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R third 
in the GTS class with a quick lap of 51.893 seconds on the picturesque 
1.54-mile road course. He drove the first stint, grabbing the class lead on the first 
lap. He relinquished the lead to the championship-leading Corvettes after 16 
minutes of the two-hour 45-minute race, but held third in class through his 
47-minute stint. 

"I went from a heroic lead on the start to third," he said. "A few laps 
later, I let them both past me into turn one because I got held up in traffic 
coming down the hill. I knew one Corvette was going to get me and the second 
Corvette was in his draft and in position and I just didn't feel like having damage 
or leaning on him. He was there and there wasn't a whole lot I could do except 
let them train by. It was frustrating because I wanted to stay ahead of them 
a little bit longer, but it was a good race and they did a great job, as 
always."

Johnny Mowlem of Maidenhead, England drove the second stint, followed by 
Borcheller for the final 52 minutes. The team notched its second third-place 
finish of the season.

"A lot of people don't like this track, but I think it's one of my 
favorites," Borcheller noted. "It's got a great rhythm to it and it's a real fun little 
track. The Pirelli tires and the car showed improvement here, Johnny obviously 
did a great job, the team did a great job and we came out with another 
podium. If we hadn't been caught out by the yellows, we possibly could have had 
something for the Corvettes at the end."

Borcheller joined a group of inner-city children at a go-kart camp in Boston 
the day after the Lime Rock race. Sports-car driver RJ Valentine donated the 
use of his F1 Boston karting facility for the event, organized by Motorsports 
Ministries.

Borcheller will drive the No. 63 ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R in the 
American Le Mans Series race at Infineon (Sears Point) Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., on 
July 18.
