Whitlock wins Canada Day Shootout at Cayuga
HAMILTON, ON - Three-time CASCAR Super Series champion Dave Whitlock won
his first race of the season on Sunday afternoon at Cayuga 2000 Speedway.
The Avenue / NMT Dodge driver climbed steadily through the field from his
16th starting position and took the lead from Kerry Micks with five laps to
go in the ATTO Canada Day Shootout.
At the end, Whitlock finished 2.02 seconds ahead of Micks’ Power
Water Ford Taurus. Third place went to series points leader Peter Gibbons.
The Canadian Tire / Monroe Brakes Chevy driver looked set to take his third
checkered flag of the season after leading 150 of the race’s 200 laps. But
his team changed two tires during their one and only stop of the race (at
lap 185), drawing a ‘stop and go’ penalty, thereby taking Gibbons out of
contention for the win. CASCAR rules prohibit drivers from changing more
than one tire, under caution, in the last 50 laps of the race.
Prior to that point, Gibbons was dominant at the 5/8-mile oval and
appeared well on his way to earning his second Cayuga win of the season. In
the end, he was the third of three lead lap finishers in the entire field.
Leading up to his ‘stop and go’ penalty, Gibbons had lapped all but
Whitlock and Micks during an extended green flag run.
Fourth-place went to defending Super Series champ Don Thomson Jr.,
in the Home Hardware Chevy. Thomson fought an ill-handling car all day but
soldiered on, missing the podium by just one position. Rookie polesitter
Pete Shepherd Jr. came home fifth after an impressive run that saw the
young Brampton, ON racer lead the first 38 laps of the race, before
settling into a comfortable pace that would see him notch his best-ever
CASCAR finish.
