Franchitti Drives Through Field
To Fourth-Place Finish At Kansas
KANSAS CITY, Kansas (July 4, 2004) - ArcaEx driver Dario Franchitti turned in a
stellar performance, driving from last to an eventual fourth-place finish at the Indy Racing
League (IRL) IndyCar® Series Argent Mortgage Kansas Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway.
The fourth-place finish was Franchitti's second top-five finish in the last three races,
and elevates him into seventh place in the IndyCar Series point standings, just four points
shy of fifth place XM Satellite Radio teammate Bryan Herta.
Franchitti qualified ninth, but started from the back of the field after the team made a
post-qualifying precautionary engine change. The 21st starting position proved to not be a
deterrent.
After a yellow flag occurred at the start of the race, Franchitti began picking off
competitors lap-after-lap. He moved the #27 ArcaEx Dallara/Honda/Firestone into 14th
position by lap 10 and was in 12th place by lap 30.
He then received stellar pit work from the ArcaEx team on lap 58, entering the pits
under green flag conditions in 12th position and rejoining the action in ninth place.
From that point, the Scotsman continued to steadily make his way through the field,
taking the seventh position by lap 80 and moving into the top five by lap 140. He battled with
teammate Herta over the final 60 laps of the race, eventually earning the fourth-place
position.
Franchitti and the rest of the IndyCar Series teams return to action in two weeks at
the Nashville Superspeedway for the Firestone Indy 200 on July 17.
Dario Franchitti, #27 ArcaEx Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"We just did it bit-by-bit today. The car was very good at some points; at other times it
would get a bit light in traffic. But, the guys did a really good job. This was great run for the
ArcaEx team on a weekend when we had Forsythe on the sidepods. My biggest problem all
day was back-markers. It was unbelievable. Something needs to be done about it because
the driving standard of some of the guys - particularly guys that are laps down - was
atrocious."
Allen McDonald, Race Engineer, Andretti Green Racing:
"Dario drove a fantastic race; hats off to him today for driving from last to fourth like
that. It was a fantastic driver's race. There were so few yellows today that there was really no
opportunity for us to play any strategy. Dario did it all by driving as hard as he could and he
did a bloody good job."
