XM Satellite Radio Driver Bryan Herta
Finishes Fifth at Kansas
Kansas City, Kansas (July 4, 2004) - XM Satellite Radio driver Bryan
Herta earned his second consecutive top-five finish this afternoon with a fifth-
place in the Indy Racing League® IndyCar® Series Argent Mortgage Kansas Indy
300 at Kansas Speedway.
Herta started from the ninth position and good pit work by the XM Satellite
Radio crew on his first pit stop moved him into the top-three. The race
progressed at a blistering pace, with 169 of the first 175 laps being run under
green. During that stretch, Herta never fell out of the top-10 and moved into
position to get the fifth-place finish on the final restart with 13 laps to go. The
finish moves Herta to fifth in the IndyCar Series championship points standings,
42 points behind fourth.
Buddy Rice earned his second win of the year with the second closest
finish in IndyCar Series history. Rice literally edged out his teammate Vitor Meira
by .0051 of a second. Herta's teammate, Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan,
was third and ArcaEx driver Dario Franchitti was fourth. Kanaan's third-place
finish allowed him to extend his points lead to 28 markers ahead of second place
Dan Wheldon.
The IndyCar Series now moves to Nashville Superspeedway on July 17
for the Firestone Indy 200. The season's final night race will begin at 7 p.m.
(EDT) and will air live on ESPN.
Bryan Herta, Driver, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"It was a solid performance. We got up to third after the first pit stop, but
we just didn't have the speed to keep up and I'm not sure why. We got a top-five
and that's another good finish for the XM Satellite Radio team. Traffic was really
bad. Some of those guys were a lap down and they were hanging me out in the
gray. We keep knocking on the door and pretty soon a win will come."
George Klotz, Team Manager, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We're happy with the top-five finish. The XM Satellite Radio team did
great all weekend. Fifth place isn't where we wanted to finish, but sometimes
you have to take what you can. It was a great showing by the whole team."
