US Bank Presents the Champ Car Grand Prix of Cleveland
Round 5 of 16
A.J. Allmendinger, #10
Qualified 6th 58.745/129.059 mph
Allmendinger used his 12th and final lap of the session to set his quick time on the bumpy 2.106-mile temporary circuit at
Burke Lakefront Airport for the US Bank Presents the Champ Car Grand Prix of Cleveland. While the American won in
Cleveland last year from the pole competing in Toyota Atlantics, today marked Allmendinger's first laps in a Champ Car
on the challenging track.
A.J. Allmendinger
"Obviously we're close with sixth (place); we're within four tenths of pole. The car was best at the end of the
session, but it's far from perfect. I know where we're losing (speed) though, which is good. It's not like at
Portland where I did my fast lap and knew that it was all the car had. So, we have room to improve and we
have an idea of how to make the car faster. This track is completely different now than from driving an Atlantic
car last year. The biggest difference is they repaved the back straight away and it's just really slick. If you're
off line a little bit, you have a hard time missing the wall. Once you get off the concrete patch that's in Turn 8
onto back straight away where there's new pavement it's really slippery. The track is still rough though, but
now I have to hold on to a 1500-pound Champ Car with 800 horsepower."
Jeremy Dale, Team President
"There's no doubt that Cleveland is a really unique race track. AJ knows the race track, but hauling a Champ
Car around here is a big deal. He did an exceptionally good job in qualifying to get sixth place. The guys are
working on the car at every single stop, making changes, and that's the unique nature of Cleveland. We have
a lot of work to do, but kudos to AJ and his crew for their solid effort."
