RINGERS GLOVES WEEKEND WRAP-UP
Indianapolis – (June 29, 2004) Lots of racing and Ringers action from across
the States this past weekend as we look at how our drivers did in NASCAR, NHRA
and more.
The drivers of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series took to one of the two road
courses on the 2004 schedule as they visited the wine country of northern
California in the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway.
Penske Racing South driver Ryan Newman was the only one of his teammates
to break a top-15 finish.
Rusty Wallace posted a second place qualifying effort, but ran out of fuel
one lap shy of the checkered flag and finished 28th.
Brendan Gaughan finished two spots ahead of Wallace in 26th, also one lap
down.
NEMCO Motorsports driver Joe Nemechek posted a 29th place finish behind
Wallace.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series drivers lit up the night on Friday in
the Black Cat Fireworks 200 at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis.
Ringers team Orleans Racing and driver Steve Park made a solid 10th place
qualifying run and brought The Orleans Racing Dodge home with a strong fourth
place finish.
In NHRA action, 2003 POWERade Pro Stock Champion Greg Anderson notched
another win (ninth of season) on his victory belt as he defeated Steve Johns at
Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill. on Sunday in the Eighth annual
Sears Craftsman Nationals.
Anderson outran Johns with a 6.726/204.98 mph run to Johns’ 6.779/205.32
mph run.
Anderson extends his points lead in Pro Stock over fellow Ringers driver
Kurt Johnson by 409 points.
Ringers racer Brad Ellingson brought home a first place finish in the TRO
Manufacturing Presents the Area 5 Championship sponsored by Continental Acura
& Audi of Naperville in the Central Division of SCCA Racing.
Ellingson also gained the points lead in the series as well.
Unfortunately besides racing over the weekend, tragedy struck at Gateway
International Raceway in Madison, Ill. at the Eighth annual NHRA Sears
Craftsman Nationals.
During second round final eliminations in Top Fuel, Columbus race winner
Darrell Russell was injured in a horrific crash just past the finish line.
Russell was unconscious but breathing at the time of helicopter transport
to St. Louis University Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries shortly
thereafter.
Russell was 35-years-old.
A trust fund has been set up in Russell’s honor and donations can be sent
to Darrell Russell Memorial Fund, Partners Bank of Texas, P.O. Box 60369,
Houston, TX 77205.
Rob Geiger, a close friend of Russell’s, has a nice remembrance posted on
www.nhra.com.
Everyone at Ringers Gloves would like to extend our thoughts and prayers
to Russell’s family, friends and to everyone at Joe Amato Racing.
