Ashley Hiltz leads Holgate Motorsports at Barrie Grand Prix
BARRIE, ONTARIO - Gilford's Ashley Hiltz led the Holgate Motorsports team
drivers at the Barrie Grand Prix this past weekend with a fifth place
finish in RotaxMax Senior.
"I am happy with the fifth," a frustrated Hiltz said. "But I am less than
happy with the way the race was run, and the actions of some of the
drivers. I was supposed to start sixth, but I had a problem getting the
engine going. When I finally got it going, I couldn't get back to my spot
before the race went green - I think I actually started 14th!"
"This is the best, but toughest race we run all year," Team Principal John
Holgate said. "We had all three in the top 20 in qualifying, but it went
downhill from there."
In qualifying, the Holgate Motorsports drivers were seventh (Ashley Hiltz),
Brad LeLiever was 11th, and Matt Stovold was 17th. A great result
considering 78 drivers were registered for the race - the top 18 all
qualified within one second of the pole.
There was no need for any of the Holgate drivers to run the last chance
race as they had all made the final. "It's much easier to sit here in the
pits and watch the last chance race than to run it," LeLiever said.
In the final, things started to go bad in a hurry for Stovold. An internal
mechanical problem kept him from completing a lap. Meanwhile up front,
LeLiever was shoved off the road on the first lap. "I just got pushed into
the hay bales," LeLiever said. "Luckily for me, the red came out at the
same time and we had a complete restart."
On the restart, LeLiever and Hiltz were soon making their way through the
field and also racing against each other. They swapped positions several
times and on the last lap, LeLiever tried to defend the inside, but a bent
axle - from his first crash - caught him out an he spun. Hiltz was there to
seize the opportunity, and bring home her CMP in a strong fifth place for
Holgate Motorsports. "Now I've cooled down a bit, I am actually happy to
have just finished this one," Hiltz said. "Street races are really tough,
and with 40 drivers all racing hard - with hay bales everywhere - it seemed
like a new track each lap."
LeLiever was scored in 13th position after recovering from his last lap spin.
