Brown works overtime in Barrie
Waterdown karter drives from 30th to 9th in Canada Junior pre-final

BARRIE, ONTARIO - Waterdown karter Tyler Brown had a strong outing at the
Barrie Grand Prix, which hosted the third round of the Sunoco Ron Fellows
Karting Championship Presented by Toronto Star Wheels.
On Saturday, Brown ran in RotaxMax Jr. In qualifying, Brown was only 0.355
of a second off pole - which left him sixth on the grid. "These are very
competitive classes," Brown said. "You have to get a good clear lap to be
near the top, and a perfect lap to be on the pole."

In the pre-final, Brown made his way up to fifth, and set his sights on the
podium for the final. "I think we were good in the pre-final, but we just
needed a little more to move forward."
In the final, Brown dropped back to eighth on the start, and then needed to
work overtime to finish fifth in the final tally. Third through fifth
crossed the line in the same second. "I had a chance at the podium on the
last lap, and I took a big risk to try to move up. It didn't pan out, but I
am happy with fifth at a big event like this."

On Sunday, Brown took on the always-competitive Canada Junior Heavy class.
A mechanical problem in qualifying left him 30th on the grid. "We had been
competitive in practice," Brown said, "Now there was more work to do." In
the pre-final, Brown moved up to ninth, and then in the final, he continued
his march forward to end up sixth. "That was a lot of work for a sixth,"
Brown said.

Earlier in the month of June saw Brown in action at one of the most popular
events in Ontario Karting, The Mosport Grand Prix. Brown qualified his
Hurricane sponsored PTK Rotax second - the outside pole. The only glitch
on the day came when the skies opened and the rain came. The pre-final was
run in the rain and a high speed spin on lap 3 would left Brown clawing
back from last to finish 8th. In the final, Brown quickly moved up to
third and then battled for the next few laps with Pearce Herder for second.
Brown had to settle for 3rd. "I fought as hard as I could, I'm happy with
third."

The following weekend Brown ran the combined Toronto and Mosport club race
at Goodwood. Brown suited up to run 4 cycle that day, part of a huge 26
kart field. He battled all day at the front, eventually bringing home
5th. Brown, who was somewhat irritated voiced his grievance after the
race. "I think they made a mistake in the tower. They signaled that we had
2 laps to go, and in 4 cycle, passes have to be set up to be successful. I
had my strategy. When I got the 2 laps to go signal, I passed Brad Forbes
of Kingston and was setting to make one more pass on the last lap - and
they threw the checkered. We got stuck with a 5th which is okay, but I felt
we were a 4th or 3rd place kart today."
