Bill Auberlen - seven for seven
Bill Auberlen is on a roll, with seven victories in his last seven races,
plus four pole positions, five fast race laps and four records. With the
exception of the first race of the season when a mechanical failure forced an early
retirement, he has won every race he has entered in three series this year.
His tally includes four wins, two poles and three fast race laps in the Rolex
Sports Car Series GT class; two wins, two record poles and two record fast
race laps in World Challenge Touring Cars and a class win in the Grand-Am Cup
series.
Auberlen, of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., has enjoyed success throughout
his race career. He started racing motocross at age four and won 39 per cent of
more than 200 motocross races he entered. He moved to sports-car racing in
1987 and has since collected four championships, 46 victories, 40 pole positions,
81 podium finishes, 28 fast laps and 19 records. He has won 32 professional
races in a BMW, more than any other North American driver.
The past two years have been rewarding, with seven wins and a championship
each year -- in the Rolex Sports Car Series GT class in 2002 and the World
Challenge Touring Car class in 2003. Auberlen also notched nine poles, 21 podiums,
11 fast race laps and eight records during the two seasons.
"This has been an unbelievable year," Auberlen said. "I thought it couldn't
be better than last year or the year before, but it just keeps getting better
and better. The teams I'm driving for are absolutely fantastic, the equipment
is fantastic, the sun and the moon are in the right place and everything is
aligned perfectly. It seems like everything is in place to pull off the wins."
Auberlen will continue his quest this season with BMW Team PTG in the Rolex
Sports Car Series and with Turner Motorsports in the Grand-Am Cup and World
Challenge Touring Car series.
