FRANCHITTI QUALIFIES 12th IN ARCAEX CAR
FOR RICHMOND NIGHT EVENT
RICHMOND, Virginia (June 25, 2004) - ArcaEx driver Dario Franchitti
recorded a lap of 168.334 miles per hour in qualifying tonight at Richmond
International Raceway, earning him the 12th starting position for Saturday night's
SunTrust Indy Challenge.
The day's practice sessions were disrupted by intermittent rain showers,
limiting the amount of on-track time available to teams and drivers. Franchitti,
making his first appearance at the three quarter-mile Richmond oval, logged a total of
77 laps prior to the evening qualifying session.
Eleven drivers broke the previous Richmond track record of 168.705 miles per
hour. Helio Castroneves won the pole with a speed of 171.202 miles per hour, 2004
Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice qualified second (170.782) and rookie Mark
Taylor (170.683) earned the third starting spot.
Round 6 of the IndyCar Series is set to begin at 7:55 p.m. (EDT) Saturday and
airs live on ESPN2 with coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. (EDT).
Dario Franchitti, #27 ArcaEx Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"The ArcaEx car doesn't feel that far off, but I think it's just far enough off that
with everyone being so close, this is where we are. Hopefully, we can learn some
stuff and move forward. As the race progresses, I think that we'll get quicker and
quicker, and progress from there."
Kyle Moyer, General Manager, Andretti Green Racing:
"I think we'll be a lot better tomorrow. We are lacking two things in that we
didn't get a chance to test here, plus, this is Dario's first time to drive at Richmond. It
takes awhile to get your confidence around a place like this. Every time he goes out
he goes faster, so give us another day and some practice time without the rain and I
think we'd be a lot better. All in all, it's great to see XM Satellite Radio teammate
Bryan Herta where he's at (7th on the grid), so we know it's in the car."
