NOTES OF INTEREST: After a string of back-to-back superspeedway events at Lowe's, Kansas, Pocono and MIS, the ARCA RE/MAX Series shifts gears for short-track duty this Saturday night at South Boston Speedway where the renowned tour, in its 52nd season, makes its 3rd consecutive appearance at the historic southern Virginia short-track. NASCAR Cup veteran Ken Schrader won both events from the pole in '02 & '03. In addition to the stars and cars of the RE/MAX Series, the Pepsi Late Model Stock Division will share the race card, which also includes an on-track autograph session and a fireworks display by Master Displays following the main events. As always, a healthy mix of series veterans and rookies will fill the field for the race including 5-time series champion and current point leader Frank Kimmel. Kimmel, third on the all-time win list with 51 triumphs, finished second at SoBo the last two years. Third-generation racers Billy Venturini and Jason Jarrett are also entered. Billy's father Bill Venturini was the '87 & '91 ARCA RE/MAX Series national champion while Jason's father Dale Jarrett won the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series crown in 1999. Jason Jarrett has one series victory (Kansas '01) while Billy Venturini is still searching out his first series win. Venturini is currently second in championship points chasing Kimmel with veteran Brent Sherman trailing in third. Sherman, who finished 4th at MIS last week, is another driver still searching out his first series win. Also entered is 2-time Daytona ARCA 200 winner Bobby Gerhart in the #5 Lucas Oil car. Gerhart finished 4th at SoBo in '02 behind Schrader, Kimmel and Venturini. Series veteran Todd Bowsher is also entered. Todd is the son of 3-time ARCA RE/MAX Series national champion Jack Bowsher who won ARCA titles in '63, '64 & '65. At present, the ARCA Rookie of the Year battle is extremely tight with Sparks, Nevada driver TJ Bell leading by just 2 points over Ryan Hemphill. AJ Fike is trailing in 3rd in ROY points 6 points out of first. Currently, Dodge leads the ARCA RE/MAX Series manufacturer points headed to South Boston over Chevrolet, Ford and Pontiac. Ironically, only 1 Dodge is entered for South Boston with 16-year-old rookie Josh Allison at the helm of the #64 AE Powersports Dodge. Christi Passmore, in the GAP Roofing-Asphalt & Fuel Ford, will make her second SoBo appearance driving for 19-time series winner Bob Schacht. Passmore tied her career-best series finish last week at MIS with a 5th place run. Her best short-track finish was 9th at Salem Speedway in 2003. Other notable entrants include 4-time series winner Mark Gibson, Centralia IL driver Joe Cooksey, Henryville IN's Darrell Basham, Pittsburgh PA's Norm Benning and Ann Arbor MI's Mike Buckley.
