Black Market in Stolen Car Parts Booms

PHILADELPHIA--June 21, 2004--Recent reports note popular cars are stolen and stripped of parts that are easily sold on the U.S. black market and/or shipped to other black markets in Europe, Central or South America. The most theft-prone vehicles are the 1995 Saturn SL, 1998 Acura Integra and 1994 Saturn SL. Their parts are sought after because they have either been discontinued, are too expensive to purchase, or highly interchangeable among subsequent years/models.

A deadbolt type lock can be used to keep cars exactly where they are parked, so they cant be moved and stripped.

The thief may be able to break in, disable the anti-theft deterrents, and start the car.

But he is unable to move a car that is using the deadbolt type lock (AutoLock).

Drills, hammers, crowbars cant budge the AutoLock, it is virtually impossible to take out.

The popular theft-prone vehicles are no longer easy prey.

How AutoLock works

Since a car's brake or clutch pedal must be depressed before moving the vehicle, the would-be thief cannot drive it when one or the other is inoperable. Users of Lawman's AutoLock slide the lock over the top of the pedal, pull the handle up and it automatically locks the pedal in place. The AutoLock has thick steel construction and a solid steel lock, which are impervious to drill and saw. Opening the lock cylinder requires a laser-cut encrypted four-sided key that cannot be duplicated. The cylinder is virtually pickproof. There is no master key. A bright yellow cover for the steering wheel and window decals will warn intruders there is an AutoLock on the brake or clutch pedal.
