FRIDAY NOTEBOOK FROM ALBERTSONS TRANS-AM 100
PORTLAND, Ore. (June 18, 2004) Fridayıs notebook for qualifying and
first-round practice for the Albertsons Trans-Am 100 at Portland
International Raceway.
* Paul Gentilozziıs Rocketsports Racing team discovered a carburetor problem
prior first-round practice and he didnıt turn a lap in the No. 3 Jaguar R
Performance XKR prior to qualifying. Gentilozzi went out early, parked the
car, and then set his fastest time on his final lap.
* Meanwhile, Tomy Drissiıs Rocketsports squad had its hands full as it had
to change a clutch just prior to qualifying. They worked on the car for much
of the session on pit road before sending Drissi out to earn the outside
pole in the No. 5 Alien Vs. Predator, Only in Theaters Jaguar XKR.
* Tommy Kendall (No. 11 Jaguar R Performance) continued to prove the new
Jaguar AJ-V8 engine is coming up to speed Friday as he set the third-fastest
time in qualifying. The AJ-V8, which was debuted last year, features a stock
block, fuel injection, four valves per cylinder and overhead camshafts.
* Brandon Davis and his father, Mike, today became the first father-and-son
duo to compete on the same track since Bobby and Don Sak in Puerto Rico last
year. The younger Davis is making his Trans-Am debut this weekend in the No.
99 New Century Mortgage/GE Access/ACS Express Racing Ford Mustang. ³This is
a lot of fun,² he said. ³Iıve been watching it for a long time. Iıve been
watching it since my dad got into it five years ago. This is a dream come
true.² ³Iım absolutely proud as hell of him,² said the elder Davis. ³Heıs
been a track rat since he was five years old. Thirteen years later, to have
him involved in Trans-Am is a dream come true for the both of us. Heıs a
good kid. He behaves himself and he has the right look for auto racing.
Weıre just excited to have him with us. 2002 Trans-Am Champion Boris Said,
who usually drives for Davis, is acting as B. Davisı driving coach. ³Boris
has been working with him, teaching him how to drive and how to do the
setup,² said M. Davis. ³Theyıve run in the same car and heıs right there
with Boris. Boris has 30 years experience, so Brandon has a lot of catching
up to do. ³They antagonize the hell out of each other.²
* The elder Davis had an off during first-round practice, but saved it in a
cloud of tire smoke. He qualified 10th on the grid later in the day.
