Elkhart Lake, Wisc., June 17, 2004-More than 425 of the top Sports Car Club of
America drivers have signed up to participate in the 49th running of the Kohler/SCCA
Chicago Region June Sprints® at Road America. The Elkhart Lake Chamber of Commerce
will receive the 2004 Governor's Cup, presented to an individual or organization that has
been involved in and actively supports sports car racing. Wisconsin Secretary of Tourism
Jim Holperin will make the presentation on Sunday during the lunch break (approx. 1 p.m.).
Friday is testing and qualifying. Saturday and Sunday morning drivers will continue
qualifying sessions followed by races. Gates open at 7 a.m. each day; tickets are $15 on
Friday, $20 on Saturday and $25 on Sunday. Children 12 and under are free, as is parking.
Road America will host SCCA driver autograph sessions during the lunch breaks on
Saturday and Sunday. Tickets include paddock access, where the teams set up, and go kart
racing on the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex on Saturday and Sunday. A free shuttle circulates
around the race track, stopping at all of the concession stands and souvenir shops. Road
America also offers on-site tent and RV camping for race fans.
The Elkhart Lake Chamber of Commerce members were instrumental in organizing
the first sports car races on the roads around Elkhart Lake as part of a bootstrap economic
development activity. Because of the success of the races in 1950, 1951 and 1952, members
of the Chamber then sold stock in Road America to capitalize the race track, which hosted its
first race in 1955.
