ARCA RE/MAX Series Pork Pole Qualifying Rained Out At Pocono; Field Set By Points
LONG POND PA (6-10-04) Thursday's ARCA RE/MAX Series Pork Pole Award Qualifying at Pocono Raceway was rained out.
Consequently, the starting field for Saturday's Pocono ARCA 200 has been set by current ARCA RE/MAX Series car owner points.
That puts veteran and five-time series champion Frank Kimmel on the pole alongside rookie Ryan Hemphill.
That should present no problem for Kimmel, who knows the tricky Pocono triangle very well; however, the same could not be said for Hemphill, who is making his first Pocono attempt.
To complicate matters more, Hemphill, who only got 8 practice laps in, blew the engine in his TRIMSPA Dodge when he missed a shift down the long frontstretch straightaway.
"I made a mistake," said Hemphill. "We were trying to get on top of the eight-ball as quick as possible because this place is new to me. I got hung up between third and fourth gear coming down the frontstretch, over-revved the motor and blew it up.
"I feel terrible for all the guys who worked so hard on this car. We haven't raced this car yet. I know it's a good car, but I really can't say how good because I just didn't get enough time with it. Hopefully, we'll get to practice in the morning."
Barring no weather issues Friday morning, ARCA RE/MAX Series final practice is scheduled from 9:45 am to 11 am.
"If I learned anything in the limited time I had on this track, it was how tricky this place is," added Hemphill. "Even if we had the best car, it's going to take one hell-of-a driver to beat Frank Kimmel or Ken Schrader out there. This is a very tricky track; you just can't beat experience here. There's just so much going on each lap.
"Hopefully, we'll get that practice in tomorrow, so I can begin to learn the track. I don't think it'll happen in a day. But I need to get myself prepared; I know the guys on the TRIMSPA Dodge team will be ready. Now, it's up to me."
NASCAR Nextel Cup Series regular Ken Schrader, who was quickest in practice in the BAM Racing Dodge, will start 32nd right behind fellow Cup competitor Scott Riggs, who starts 30th. Riggs, hoping to gain some valuable seat-time in the Pocono ARCA 200 to help him with Sunday's Cup race, is another driver making his first Pocono attempt this weekend.
Saturday's Pocono ARCA 200 is scheduled to roll off at 1 pm eastern. SPEED Channel will carry same-day coverage at 8 pm eastern.
