Expanding Sensors Market Discussed Sensors Expo in Detroit
DETROIT--June 9, 2004--Trade Show and Conference Continues Through Thursday, June 10th |
Donald L. Runkle, vice chairman of Delphi Corporation , delivered the opening day keynote presentation yesterday at Sensors Expo & Conference, being held this week at the COBO Hall Exposition Center in Detroit. Mr. Runkle's presentation was delivered to a standing room only crowd of engineers and corporate managers focused on the expanding sensors market in the automotive industry.
"Zero defects should be the only acceptable level in any industry. If 99.9 percent was good enough, for instance, 22,000 checks would be deducted from the wrong bank accounts every hour and hospital maternity wards would give 12 babies to the wrong parents every day," Runkle said. "It's the same in the automotive industry. Consumers will not tolerate malfunctions and down time on their vehicles."
Today, approximately 22 percent of a vehicle's content is electronic, including systems in the powertrain, body, chassis and cockpit. Many of these systems are in place to help meet emission standards, improve fuel economy and safety and to make a vehicle more comfortable and convenient for drivers and passengers. More than 30 types of sensors reside within a vehicle's electronic systems and Delphi designs and develops most of them in technical centers throughout the world. Delphi Corp. has created an array of sensors that help improve vehicle emissions, fuel economy and safety, and provide in-vehicle convenience features for consumers. These same sensors also can be applied to technology in other markets, including medical, white goods, manufacturing and microelectronics.
Today at 11:00 a.m., Kermit Hoffman, president of GE Infrastructure Sensing - Americas will present "Innovative Sensing Technologies that Drive Productivity, Quality and Safety." Mr. Hoffman is responsible for all operational and financial aspects of the business throughout North, Central and South America, as well as for the business technology, market and channel strategy. "I am delighted to be participating in the 2004 Sensors Expo and Conference. The exchange of ideas and the ability to foster new relationships is vitally important in driving innovation and productivity for new and existing sensing applications," said Mr. Hoffman.
There are also several exceptional events taking place during the Sensors Expo. Special Events include the Best of Sensors Expo Awards and Networking Reception, a Tour of the Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems Laboratories at Wayne State University and the Innovation Theater. Conferees also have access to the Sensors Expo & Conference exhibit hall where they can compare and contrast sensor products, systems, and services from the industry's leading suppliers. Engineers and scientists from several labs and research facilities are providing live demonstrations and briefings on the show floor.
