In an interview on Independent Television (ITV) in the United Kingdom on June 3, 2004, London Mayor Ken Livingstone said: "What the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) will do is from 2007, buses, coaches, taxis, and any large vehicle coming in (to the London area), if its polluting, it's illegal and what we are giving (is) three years notice that firms have to get modern, clean vehicles and stop that pollution." Livingstone is running for re-election on June 10, 2004 and has an over 10 percent lead in the polls according to The London Times (Thursday, June 3, 2004).
KleenAir believes that the number of affected vehicles entering the LEZ defined by the M25 Ring Road is approximately 250,000. While it is expected that there will be increased pressure to replace fleets with new vehicles, KleenAir believes that the bulk of the fleets will opt to upgrade through the use of add-on emission control devices that will enable them to meet the current air quality standards.
"We expect to be a major player in retrofitting many of those vehicles, having already been approved at the highest grant level by the Energy Savings Trust Clean-Up Register for all the categories that would be impacted," said Lionel Simons, president of KleenAir, "and the considerable field experience we expect to have by that time through multiple additional London taxicab installations will have proved and tested our products extensively in the interim."
The Energy Savings Trust has conducted over 200 tests on KleenAir fitted London taxicabs, buses, and refuse collection vehicles, mostly at the General Motors Millbrook Proving Grounds, the United Kingdom's premier vehicle testing center.
KleenAir is at the cutting edge of automotive emission reduction technology including Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Diesel Particulate Filters, Diesel Oxidizing Catalysts and advanced catalytic technology that significantly reduces nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and particulates. These pollutants have been shown to be a major contributor to heart and lung disease.
