NOTES OF INTEREST: The Pocono ARCA 200 will be the 38th ARCA RE/MAX Series event on the 2.5-mile Pocono triangle since 1983. However, the first ARCA race at Pocono was in 1969 on the ¾-mile oval won by Bobby Watson in a Dodge. This year's event presents an interesting mix of talent from rookies to veterans and everywhere in between. From the veteran side, NASCAR Cup drivers Ken Schrader and Scott Riggs have filed entries. Schrader, and 11-time RE/MAX Series winner, will make his 32nd career series start at Pocono while Riggs will be making his first. Former Pocono winner and current point leader Frank Kimmel will be making his 266th career series start at Pocono as will series veteran Mark Gibson, whose career-best Pocono finish was 2nd in 1998. Veteran Bobby Gerhart is also entered with his new title sponsor Lucas Oil. Jason Jarrett (currently 3rd in points), coming off a solid 3rd place finish at Kansas Speedway, will be making his 7th Pocono start on Saturday. Jarrett finished 2nd twice at Pocono in 2002. Series veterans Billy Venturini (currently 2nd in points), Brent Sherman (currently 4th in points), Todd Bowsher, Mike Buckley, Christi Passmore, Norm Benning, Brad Smith, AJ Henriksen and Joe Cooksey are all entered. From the rookie side, Ryan Hemphill will lead the way in Todd Braun's TRIMSPA Dodge. Hemphill has been on fire since his 5th place debut at Daytona with 3 consecutive superspeedway victories at Kentucky Speedway, Lowe's Motor Speedway and Kansas. Hemphill has also won 3 Pork Pole awards at Nashville, Lowe's and Kansas. Galesburg IL rookie AJ Fike currently leads the ARCA Rookie of the Year points by just 6 markers over Sparks NV rookie TJ Bell, who is tied for 2nd in ROY points with Hemphill. Hemphill, despite not competing in the short-track event earlier this year at Salem, is currently 6th in series points right behind Fike who is 5th overall. Like Hemphill, Fike and Bell, 18-year-old rookie Brandon Knupp will also be making his first attempt on the Pocono triangle. Knupp, who drives for Pennsylvania veteran Andy Belmont - who by the way is entered in the Cup race at Pocono - received his high school diploma last Saturday from Kansas Speedway President Jeff Boerger during driver intros. 18-year-old rookie David Ragan, son of NASCAR Cup/ARCA RE/MAX Series veteran Ken Ragan, will also be making his first Pocono attempt in the Bobby Jones-owned Dodge. Despite a very stellar entry list, Kimmel is the only former Pocono winner entered. Tim Steele is the all-time winner at Pocono with 9 victories including five in a row ('96 through '98) followed by Bob Schacht with 6 and Bob Keselowski with 5. Mike Wallace has 3; Jimmy Horton and Casey Mears each have 2; 1-time winners include Blaise Alexander, Casey Atwood, Kerry Earnhardt, Ben Hess, Bobby Jacks, Frank Kimmel, Damon Lusk, Ryan Newman, Jeff Purvis and Lee Raymond. 13 ARCA RE/MAX races at Pocono have been won from the pole.
