Gibbons heads to Peterborough’s ‘Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200’ on a
two-race winning streak
LONDON, ON – While the current CASCAR Super Series season is only two races
old, there are a few noticeable trends developing. Three-time and defending
National champion Don Thomson Jr. has posted the fastest time during time
trials for each of the season’s first two events; at Delaware and Cayuga.
But when it comes to results, the story has been Peter Gibbons’ total
domination of victory lane.
Heading into the ‘Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200’ at Peterborough Speedway
this coming Saturday night (June 12), the Canadian Tire / Monroe Brakes
Chevy driver has won both races in strong style. Most recently, on Sunday
afternoon at Cayuga, Gibbons was in a class of his own as he stretched out
a five-plus second lead by the end of the Power Water 200.
Delaware and Cayuga are two of the longer tracks on the Super Series tour,
but that doesn’t mean the Stouffville, ON racer doesn’t have what it takes
to extend his winning streak on the tight, 1/3-mile high-banked
Peterborough oval. Gibbons finished third in last year’s second
Peterborough Speedway race, in September.
Gibbons attributes his quick start to several factors. Primarily, his use
of his 2003 car means that he’s already worked the bugs out of his car,
which is in contrast to previous seasons when Gibbons always started each
season with a brand new car. He also believes he’s hit on a winning formula
in terms of engine development, after working hard on his powerplants at
his North Carolina shop.
“We’ve been working hard on the motors and we’ve just come up with a good
combination. We’re motivated to win races and make sure the car is right.
Last year, we had a chance to win the championship and we fell out of three
races. My theory is we’re coming out to win every race.”
Kerry Micks is the defending winner of the ‘Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200’.
The Taurus driver sat on the pole for the June 7, 2003 race and survived a
race-long battle with Don Thomson to win the entertaining race, which ran
without a caution flag for the final 101 laps. This is the second year in a
row that the Dodge Dealers of Ontario have been the title sponsor of the
season’s first Peterborough CASCAR race.
