Delphi's Sensor Capability Continues to Expand
More than 15 types of sensors on display at 2004 Spring Sensors Expo
Delphi Vice Chairman Don Runkle to deliver keynote address
TROY, Mich., June 7 -- Delphi Corp. has created an array of sensors that help improve vehicle emissions, fuel economy and safety, and provide in-vehicle convenience features for consumers. These same sensors also can be applied to technology in other markets, including medical, white goods, manufacturing and microelectronics.

More than 15 types of such sensors will be on display in Detroit's Cobo Center for the 2004 Spring Sensor Expo, today through Thursday, June 10, at Delphi's exhibit (booth #639).
During the show, Delphi will demonstrate just how well a traditional automotive component and system supplier can compete and succeed in increasingly sophisticated markets. Delphi's keys to success include competitive pricing based on low cost, robust engineering expertise, a global footprint, and efficient bill of design applications.
Don Runkle, Delphi's vice chairman of enterprise technologies, will deliver the show's keynote address on June 8 at 11 a.m. He will discuss the expanding sensors market within the automotive sector and the ability to transfer sensor engineering and manufacturing expertise to other industries.
"Zero defects should be the only acceptable level in any industry. If 99.9 percent was good enough, for instance, 22,000 checks would be deducted from the wrong bank accounts every hour and hospital maternity wards would give 12 babies to the wrong parents every day," Runkle said. "It's the same in the automotive industry. Consumers will not tolerate malfunctions and down time on their vehicles. Delphi's 100 years of manufacturing experience and focus on design and quality positions us to become a sensor leader in many industries."
Today, approximately 22 percent of a vehicle's content is electronic, including systems in the powertrain, body, chassis and cockpit. Many of these systems are in place to help meet emission standards, improve fuel economy and safety and to make a vehicle more comfortable and convenient for drivers and passengers. More than 30 types of sensors reside within a vehicle's electronic systems and Delphi designs and develops most of them in technical centers throughout the world.

Emissions/Fuel Economy
One of the latest additions to Delphi's sensor portfolio is designed to work with the current electronics for air/fuel control to help improve fuel economy and emissions. The Integrated Manifold Air Temperature/Absolute Pressure Sensor is a low-cost, highly functional sensor that monitors air temperature and absolute pressure.
Delphi's Chemical Sensing product family of switching, linear, constituent and combination sensors helps monitor exhaust emissions and will help vehicles meet SULEV and Euro V emission levels.
Safety
Delphi's Forewarn Back-Up Aid Dual Beam Radar helps drivers detect pets, children, vehicles and other objects when backing and aids in tight parking situations. Forewarn Adaptive Cruise Control with Driver Alert automatically alerts the driver and adjusts speed when slower traffic is present.
Convenience
Delphi's smart sensors combine basic sensing functions with the intelligence to provide innovative solutions. For example, the Integrated Dew Point and Glass Temperature (IDGT) sensor measures surface temperature, air temperature and humidity. These key dew point inputs are used by an automatic climate control system to predict and prevent window fogging.
The Air Quality Sensor contributes to a more comfortable cabin environment because of higher quality air. In a typical vehicle application, the air quality sensor "sniffs" the outside air as it enters through the cabin air intake and detects poor-quality air. An automatic climate control system can close the air intake vent and initiate the re-circulation function until the vehicle drives out of the area.
