Thomson takes second consecutive pole of '04 during qualifying for Sunday's
Power Water 200
HAMILTON, ON - Don Thomson Jr. collected his second CASCAR Super Series
pole in as many qualifying sessions held so far in 2004 when he posted the
fastest time, on Saturday afternoon, at Cayuga 2000 Speedway during time
trials for Sunday afternoon's Power Water 200.
Thomson, the three-time and defending Super Series champ, circled the
legendary 5/8-mile Hamilton area track in 21.335 seconds. Thomson's Home
Hardware Chevy also sat on the pole in the season-opening MOPAR 250, which
took place last weekend at Delaware Speedway.
Starting alongside Thomson in the Power Water 200 will be his longtime
championship rival, DJ Kennington. The St. Thomas, ON racer lapped Cayuga
Speedway in 21.488 seconds to earn the outside pole in his Castrol Dodge.
A total of 32 cars participated in time trials for Sunday's race; the
first of three to be held this season at Cayuga. Delaware race winner Peter
Gibbons will start third in the Power Water 200. The Canadian Tire / Monroe
Brakes Chevy driver won last year's Canada Day Shootout at Cayuga.
J.R. Fitzpatrick qualified 13th-fastest in time trials, which was the best
of all the rookies who took part in qualifying. The Latta Crane Chevy
driver was the top finishing rookie at last week's Delaware event. The
Power Water 200 takes the green flag Sunday at 2 p.m., after a morning of
pre-race activities, including the Super Series driver autograph session.
