NISMO/Team RTR Nissan Sentra Places a Strong Third in SCCA World Challenge Touring Car Lime Rock Event
LAKEVILLE, Conn.--June 2, 2004--Although the weather forecast had been for rain during the week, race day at Round Two of the SCCA SPEED Touring Car season at Lime Rock Park broke cloudy but dry, with the 65 degree temperatures near perfect for both racers and spectators. Veteran driver Peter Cunningham in the #4 NISMO/TeamRTR/Nissan Sentra SE-R started the 50-minute race from 7th position, with an eye toward moving up steadily but patiently.By the first caution flag on lap 6, Cunningham had improved his position to 6th. At the re-start, Cunningham dropped back a position but by skillfully avoiding a series of accidents occurring in front of him, his Nissan Sentra was up to 5th by lap 15 and on lap 21, he increased his position to 4th. On lap 32, thanks again in part to contact by competitors in front of him, Cunningham moved into 3rd place and kept the position to the finish, just 7.33 seconds behind the winning BMW.
The next race will be held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course from June 25 to 27, a track well-suited to the powerful, great handling Sentra. Last year Cunningham put on a driving clinic, after charging from last in the field due to a first lap tangle, to finish fifth.
