Saint Thomas Academy Team Breaks National Solar Car Record - Media Event and Test Drive June 2
School's Experimental Vehicle Team Sets Fourth National Title in Five Years
MENDOTA HEIGHTS (May 26, 2004) - Rising gas costs have not only raised consumers' interests in high-mileage, fuel-efficient vehicles (even hybrids), but they have also renewed America's interest in alternative fuel sources. The students at Saint Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, Minnesota have been thinking ahead of the curve for a few years now, developing alternative- powered vehicle prototypes that could provide the chassis or engine for tomorrow's showroom models.
Averaging speeds of more than 30 miles an hour, the Saint Thomas Academy (STA) Experimental Vehicle Team set a new Solar BikeRayce national record on May 23, 2004, completing 100 km in 1:52.36 at the annual Solar BikeRayce USA, an international, closed-course "rayce" held in Topeka, Kansas.
On Wednesday, June 2, 2004 from 1:00-3:30 p.m., Saint Thomas Academy students will showcase their national record-setting vehicle on the Elko Speedway, inviting media to come out and test the solar car and bike for themselves.
