TRW Automotive Announces Next Generation Steering Systems

LIVONIA, Mich., May 25, 2004 -- TRW Automotive today unveiled its next generation electrically powered hydraulic steering (EPHS) system developed to support vehicle manufacturers applying such systems to larger vehicles. A TRW Automotive subsidiary has secured contracts for the new generation system with two major European vehicle manufacturers, starting production in 2006.

More than 200 models are expected to be fitted with TRW steering systems in the model years 2004 to 2008 ranging from electrically powered steering, through EPHS and hydraulic steering to manual steering systems.

The breakthrough EPHS technology will deliver the benefits of greater fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions associated with electrically powered steering systems (EPS) while delivering the required power, steering feel and packaging options associated with hydraulic systems which some vehicle manufacturers prefer.

Engineering director of EPHS steering systems for TRW Automotive, Dr. Dieter Fehlings, said: "TRW has developed a product that delivers improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and greater power output compared to standard EPHS, while retaining the cost benefits of an hydraulic system.

"In tests, the new generation of EPHS system delivers an 80 percent improvement in fuel economy (compared to standard hydraulic steering systems; this reduction in fuel consumption leads to a respective three percent improvement in CO2 emissions).

"The EPHS system also delivers multispeed, positive and responsive steering feel and the possibility for vehicle manufacturers to fine-tune the steering characteristics."

Alistair McQueen, engineering director for EPS systems added: "At the same time we continue to develop our EPS systems -- both column and rack drive systems -- to meet the needs of those customers who are choosing to move straight to this technology for its even better fuel efficiency and packaging benefits. EPS systems offer added functionality such as torque assist and integration with other chassis systems such as braking.

TRW Automotive's column drive EPS systems are in production on Renault, Nissan and Fiat models, with a number of launches planned for this model year.

Product manager, steering, Ken Lowe added: "We are in discussions with a number of customers regarding our rack drive technology that will deliver EPS for D segment vehicles and we are also working to develop enhanced power output for our column drive EPS system for upper C segment models.
