RYAN DALZIEL FASTEST IN FIRST-ROUND QUALIFYING FOR GRAND PRIX OF MONTERREY:
PADS LEAD IN TOYOTA ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY YOKOHAMA STANDINGS
MONTERREY, Mexico (May 21, 2004) Ryan Dalziel padded his lead in the
Toyota Atlantic Championship Presented by Yokohama point standings by
setting the fastest time in first-round qualifying for Sundayıs
Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix Friday at Fundidora Park. The affable
Scot, driving the No. 28 Pro-Works car, turned the 2.104-mile permanent road
course in one minute, 25.571 seconds at an average speed of 88.516 miles per
hour. The fast lap assures Dalziel a front-row starting position for
Sundayıs race and also nets him one bonus championship point.
³This is a great start to the weekend,² said Dalziel. ³We came here knowing
we had a lot of work to do. We struggled here last year. We worked hard and
we showed in Long Beach how hard we worked over the winter. We keep get
stronger and stronger every time we get in the car.²
Alex Figge (No. 69 Pacific Coast Motorsports) was second quickest.
³Surprisingly, I donıt have to pee now,² said Figge. ³I peed before I went
out. I was having a good battle with Ryan and (teammate Jon Fogarty) was
right there at the end. Iım happy to be where I am. Weıre comfortably here.
Weıre not desperate or anything, so tomorrow should be right along the same
lines.²
Figgeıs teammate Jon Fogarty (No. 96 Pacific Coast Motorsports) was third
fastest.
³I felt pretty good about my session,² said Fogarty. ³I donıt think we were
able to show exactly what we had. We were hampered a bit by others on the
race track. Iım a little ticked about that, but weıre solid. Yet, itıs
always frustrating when donıt think you got that maximum out of the car,
especially during a qualifying session. Iım pleased. Weıre right there.²
Danica Patrick (No. 24 Argent Mortgage Company) equaled her best career
qualifying effort of fourth, set at Trois-Rivières last year, while Bryan
Sellers (No. 19 Lynx Racing) completed the top five.
³The Argent guys did a good job in the pits to keep up with the car and make
it faster and faster,² said Patrick. ³We went out on stickers and we were
actually first, but we went just a little too far on a change and the car
wasnıt good during the final run. It feels good to be up in the top four and
to be in the hunt for the pole. This is a track that is only going to get
faster. Obviously, having raced here last year and knowing the track is a
big plus for us.²
BG Products Rookie of the Year contender Jonathan Bomarito (No. 8
Dixien/Omnisource) missed most of the session due to gearbox problems and
qualified 13th.
