Child Passenger Safety Day at over 200 sites across the nation

BLOOMINGTON, Ill., May 13, 2004 -- On Saturday, May 15, 2004th we will be hosting our fourth annual Child Safety Day at over 200 sites across the nation. The focus of this event is ensuring that children are properly secured in child safety seats or booster seats that are appropriate for their age and size. Many of the sites will also host a safety fair with educational activities including bike rodeos, in-line skating safety, and fire prevention safety.

Motor vehicle crashes remain the number one cause of death among children ages 2 to 14 years. State Farm is committed to reducing these unfortunate incidents. Since 1997, State Farm has worked collaboratively with The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania to study why and how children are injured or killed in crashes. The initiative, known as Partners for Child Passenger Safety (PCPS), is the largest of its kind, with nearly 454,000 children participating so far.

One of the early findings of PCPS was that 83% of children between the ages 3 to 8 years were being prematurely graduated to an adult seat belt, rather than using a child safety seat or booster seat.
