KANAAN LOOKS FOR COMFORT ON OPENING DAY AT IMS
SPEEDWAY, Ind. (May 9, 2004) - Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan ran his first laps
at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since last year's Indianapolis 500 as practice opened today for
the May 30th running of the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing."
Kanaan, who drove both the primary and backup versions of the Team 7-Eleven
Dallara/Honda/Firestone, logged 23 laps around the 2.5-mile oval as he looked for a
comfortable setup from which to work for the rest of the week leading up to "Pole Day" on
Saturday. Kanaan eventually turned a quick lap of 217.269 miles per hour (41.4233 seconds),
which ranked ninth on the day among the 33 cars that posted a time.
Defending Indy Racing League® IndyCar® Series champion Scott Dixon recorded the
fastest speed on Opening Day at 219.760 miles per hour (40.9537 seconds). He was followed
by Helio Castroneves, who clocked in at 219.752 miles per hour (40.9552 seconds). Adrian
Fernandez was third at 218.342 miles per hour (41.2197 seconds) and was followed by Tomas
Scheckter at 218.308 (41.2261) and Kanaan's Andretti Green Racing teammate, Dan Wheldon,
at 218.007 (41.2831).
Practice for the Indianapolis 500 continues tomorrow, beginning at 12 p.m. (EDT).

Tony Kanaan, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"We slowly got up to speed today. We were being really conservative. We really weren't
looking for a lap time or anything with the Team 7-Eleven car. I'm happy with today. I found
what I wanted, even though the speeds don't look as good as Dan's (Wheldon). But, we're
there. I think we're in the ballpark and I'm happy. It's just the first day and it's a long week until
Pole Day."
Eric Cowdin, Race Engineer, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"Our #1 goal was to get Tony to a comfortable place we can use as a working point for
the rest of the week. That was our first goal and then our second was to shake down both cars,
which we accomplished also. I really have to give the credit to the guys on the crew. They did a
great job. I think everybody saw a lot of Andretti Green cars roll out and do laps today without
any problem and that really says something about our mechanics and the whole organization."
