Canadian Tire Retail Selects Fujitsu For In-store Technology Systems and Services

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario--May 4, 2004--Canadian Tire Retail and the Canadian Tire Dealers' Association have named Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. as their supplier of retail point-of-sale hardware systems and services for Canadian Tire stores. Fujitsu will supply its TeamPoS 2000 M POS terminals, PRIMERGY TX150 servers and managed services, including staging, integration, on-site/depot maintenance and call center support.

Canadian Tire Retail, one of Canada's largest and most-shopped retailers, will pilot Fujitsu systems this spring. Full rollout to Canadian Tire's nationwide store network is expected to be completed in 2005, and includes TeamPoS terminals, running Microsoft Windows XPe, and PRIMERGY servers to meet business-critical computing needs at each store location.

Canadian Tire's Associate Dealers, which independently operate 452 stores across Canada, have approximately 5,000 lanes. According to Canadian Tire, installation of the new systems is part of the most extensive store renewal program in the company's history.

"The Fujitsu team has a clear understanding of the technology needs of retailers. They worked closely with us to develop a model illustrating the return-on-investment for a multitude of scenarios," said Neil Maizen, Canadian Tire Dealers' Association's vice president of business and IT strategy.

"In an organization as large and widespread as ours, the cumulative effect of reducing maintenance costs over the lifecycle of technology systems can have a tremendous impact on our business performance. It helps keep costs down and prices competitive for our customers. Our new POS hardware will also help dealers continue their focus on customer service and sales growth, rather than on their store systems," Maizen said.

Andrew Casey, director IT retail delivery of Canadian Tire added, "Canadian Tire and its dealers are looking to leverage POS along with the other in-store technologies to maximize customer experience and value. Throughout the selection process, Fujitsu's team demonstrated an in-depth of knowledge and passion for the retail industry, supported by solid technologies and services. It was clear to us that Fujitsu shares our commitment of delivering a flexible and reliable solution that will allow us to drive down the total cost of ownership of our store system technology."

Fujitsu's TeamPoS 2000 M is one of the general retail industry's first point-of-sale systems to incorporate the Intel Pentium M processor. The Intel Pentium M processor enables the TeamPoS 2000 M system to be configured with fewer components and be designed for easy remote management to reduce total cost of ownership. As a result, TeamPoS 2000 M offers increased performance, greater reliability and can be economically upgraded, providing retailers the ability to expand their POS capabilities into the future.

The PRIMERGY server line encompasses entry-level servers, compact and scalable blade systems, or advanced multiprocessor servers capable of handling the most demanding data center applications. PRIMERGY servers are designed to be easy to maintain, expand and upgrade to enhance productivity and protect the customer's technology investments.

"We respect the confidence that Canadian Tire and the Canadian Tire Dealers' Association have placed in Fujitsu and our value proposition, as it stresses a collaborative approach to cost reduction and a win-win relationship," said Austen Mulinder, president and chief executive officer for Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "We are pleased that they have selected Fujitsu as a strategic lifecycle partner for in-store retail technology and services. Canadian Tire and the Associate Dealers have been an integral part of the Canadian population and landscape for more than 80 years and we are proud to play a role in helping them meet their customers' needs"
