Congressional Speedway Caucus and Indiana Society of Washington to Host 'Indy 500' Drivers, Race Cars on Capitol Hill
* What: A ceremony sponsored by the Congressional Speedway Caucus (chaired by Rep. Julia Carson, D-IN) and the Indiana Society of Washington, D.C. (Janet Powell, president); * Why: To celebrate the May 30th running of the 83rd Indianapolis "500," the "crown jewel" of motor sports.
There will be two race cars on hand. One is a Purex car, previously raced by Robbie Buhl. The other, a Delphi car, has been modified to be a two-seater equipped to run on city streets. Except for the second seat, it looks just like the car Scott Sharp will drive in the "500." Members of Congress and the news media in attendance will be invited to take a ride in this car.
* When: 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 5, 2004 * Where: In front of the Capitol Hill Club, 300 First Street S.E. * Who: Indy drivers: Scott Sharp of the Kelly team (sponsored by Delphi Corporation), Robbie Buhl, former "500" driver and two- time Indy Racing League race winner (now a team co-owner); Eddie Cheever, winner of the 1998 "500" (now a team owner); Al Unser, Jr., winner of the 1992 and 1994 "500"; and Johnny Rutherford, three-time "500" winner (1974, '76, '80). * How (for TV cameras): A lead vehicle will be provided from which you can film your reporter while he/she rides in the Indy "500" street-capable car.
